Licensed Electrician Serving Venice, Florida
Venice has a personality all its own -- from the 1920s John Nolen-designed downtown to the laid-back neighborhoods of South Venice. Donny McGuire knows the electrical landscape here and has worked on everything from tiny Venice Island bungalows to sprawling estate homes along the Myakka River.
Venice Island Homes and Their Electrical History
Venice Island is one of the prettiest parts of Sarasota County, but from an electrician's standpoint, it is also one of the most challenging. The original homes on the island were built in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers planned community. Those homes have been standing for nearly a century, and a lot of them still have original wiring -- or at least wiring from the 1950s or 1960s when someone last touched it.
Donny has done full rewiring jobs on Venice Island homes where he pulled out cloth-insulated wiring that was crumbling to dust. In some of these houses, the original knob-and-tube wiring from the 1920s is still live in parts of the attic. That is not something you want to leave in place. He rewires these homes carefully, working with the older construction methods -- plaster walls, balloon framing in some cases -- so the house keeps its character while getting a safe, modern electrical system.
Panel Upgrades Are the Number One Call in Venice
More than any other service, Venice homeowners call Donny for panel upgrades. The reason is simple: a lot of Venice homes were built when 60-amp or 100-amp service was the norm. Those panels cannot handle what people are running today. Central air alone can draw 30-40 amps, and when you add the water heater, the stove, the dryer, and the pool pump, there is nothing left. Breakers start tripping, and that is when people pick up the phone.
Donny sees a lot of Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels in the Venice area. Both brands are known for breakers that fail to trip during an overcurrent event, which is another way of saying they can start fires. Insurance companies are increasingly refusing to cover homes with those panels. Donny swaps them out for modern 200-amp panels with arc-fault and ground-fault protection where code requires it.
South Venice and the Waterway Neighborhoods
South Venice, on the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway, has a completely different feel than Venice Island. It is more residential, more spread out, and the homes range from 1960s concrete block ranch houses to newer construction near the Venetian Waterway Park. The older South Venice homes along Shamrock Boulevard and Edmondson Road frequently need rewiring, outlet additions, and panel work.
The neighborhoods near the Venetian Waterway trail are popular with people who want that old-Florida feel without being right on the beach. Donny does a lot of outdoor lighting in these neighborhoods -- path lights along walkways, accent lighting in garden beds, and underwater-rated fixtures near backyard water features. The area has big mature trees and lush landscaping that looks amazing when it is properly lit at night.
Pool Cage Lighting Along the Gulf
Venice has no shortage of pool cages, and Donny's pool cage lighting is a popular add-on for Venice homeowners. The homes in the Venetia Bay and Plantation communities have large screened enclosures that are perfect for LED lighting installations. Most Venice pool cages were built with no lighting at all, which means the pool area goes completely dark after sunset. Donny mounts LED strips along the cage structure -- hidden during the day, but at night they wash the whole space in whatever color the homeowner wants.
Because Venice sits right on the Gulf, salt corrosion is a real concern for any outdoor electrical work. Donny uses stainless steel fasteners, marine-rated junction boxes, and UV-stabilized wiring for every exterior installation. The extra care up front means the system holds up for years instead of corroding in the first wet season.

Permits Through Sarasota County
Venice falls under Sarasota County's permitting jurisdiction, and Donny pulls permits on every job that requires one. No exceptions. He has worked with Sarasota County inspectors for years, knows what they look for, and his work passes inspection the first time. When you sell your home, having permitted and inspected electrical work on record is a real asset. When you do not have it, it can kill a deal.
